Diagnosed Idiopathic Epilepsy - AWAKE all night pacing & panting

Hi, they did a spinal tap while he was under during the MRI. Waiting on results.

There was brain swelling due to the seizure activity on Sunday that was not diagnosed by our home ER Vet. He had a fever which led to the swelling. Last night while in the ICU, he had pacing activity so they had to give him Valium and more phenobarbitol. Which means he cannot come home today, he needs to be monitored for another 24 hours without seizures or seizure activity.

Hi there. I saw this earlier and tried to respond... but I have a heck of a time trying to do it with my phone. Now I am on the pc and I am anxiously awaiting news on Fletch. I just wanted to share our story with you. Vegas was only 10 months old when he was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. He is now just over 10 years old. He suffers from seizures every few weeks.. but since we've had him on CBD oil, things have been improving. Currently he's on phenobarbital, zonisamide and Potassium bromide.

I began to read about Vegas last week when this was all happening. We are a nervous wreck over this. Due to the brain swelling, it was detrimental he did not have any seizures last night while in the ICU, but we were notified today that there was some pacing behavior / agitation so they gave him Valium right away. He is sedated now, but they are going to begin to wean him off of the Valium today in hopes he does not have another seizure.

I will read up on it more now. Due to no infection in the brain, they do believe idiopathic epilepsy, with the prolonged seizure activity on Sunday which was really harmful to his case. Will continue to send updates. Thank you for the information, we are really at a loss right now for words.

No he is not. They took him off of Zonisamide and Keppra. Zonisamide is not this neurologists drug of choice for seizures, and he showed elevated kidney levels / acidocity on admission into hopsital.

He is on the phenobaribtal (not sure of dosage yet) and just the Valium to help the seizure he had last night.

No he is not. They took him off of Zonisamide and Keppra. Zonisamide is not this neurologists drug of choice for seizures, and he showed elevated kidney levels / acidocity on admission into hopsital.

Trifexis is a different med all together. It’s used to treat heart worm among other things. Just wanted to make sure he wasn’t on anything like it. One of the ingredients in Trifexis is a drug that was first developed to paralyze the nervous system of bugs.

He received Heartgard and Nexgard, but the last monthly dosage was given in May. He did not do well with it, and spit it out so we decided not to give it to him again, especially in the cold weather.

Could that be a connection if the last dose was May?

I’ve not heard about either of those. I know Trifexis for sure. My friend lost her bulldog to Trifexis when he started seizing. For several months they could not figure it out. Finally the connection was made, but it was too late.

We are in New York, close to New York City, which is why we brought him in to Animal Medical Center in Manhattan to see the neurologist specialist. He was ultimately diagnosed idiopathic epilepsy, with phenobarbital and Keppra meds. He did great for 5 days, and last night we had to bring him back for head tremoring.

We became very nervous that the head tremors were seizures, they were very close togehter and happened everytime he tried to close his eyes. They gave him bloodtest and physical quick neuro, and all unremarkable. They gave him a loading dose of Keppra and assumed it was idiopathic head tremors.

Are these incidents related?! We do not understand how they would not be connected. After all he has been through.

Head tremors are extremely common in bulldogs. Some say they are caused by weak or tired neck muscles.
Makes sense to me. If my head was that big or heavy I might have trouble holding it up.

My neurologist said if it’s something that can be interrupted with talk, touch, food or any other distraction, it’s not a seizure.

How is he doing? What did the spinal tap/tests indicate, meningitis or anything? I am thinking of you... we have hydrocephalus which was the cause of Wilbur's seizures. he's on phenobarbital for it now but we have keppra in case of clusters...
Just wondering if an infection (viral or bacterial) was diagnosed?
